Fast growing deciduous tree native to stream banks and marshy places from Alaska to northern California, usually found in areas with maritime influence. Grows 40 - 50 ft. tall by 20 - 30 ft. wide. Handsome smooth gray bark with dark green oblong leaves with prominent venation. Attractive pendulous catkins of male flowers in winter are followed by clusters of small decorative woody cone-like fruits which house the seed. The roots are shallow and spreading and provide good erosion control where water is plentiful. Tolerates brackish water. Seeds are relished by birds.
