Consider Fall Planting

Now is the time to make plans for fall planting. In mild Bay Area climates, September brings shorter days and cooler temperatures, conditions perfect for planting and establishing California native plants. The soil is still warm, encouraging root growth. The cooler evenings and mornings make for less stress from the loss of moisture through the plants foliage. As long as you have your watering figured, either by hand or through irrigation, you can get a jump on things with fall planting. You will be rewarded come spring, as the air begins to warm and your plantings begin to grow from strong root systems, better prepared to endure the warmer, dryer days of summer.

Check out our latest inventory to see our diverse offerings. Come on by and see first hand our very full nursery. We have exceptional availability right now, ready for your fall planting. You will see an extensive selection of NATIVE SAGES (Salvia) which are drought and deer tolerant and are fantastic pollinator plants. The non-native TEUCRIUMS offer equal toughness, drought and deer resistance as well as being bee favorites. We have a nice selection of CALIFORNIA FUCHSIAS (Epilobium) which are spreading perennials with tubular orangey-red flowers that attract hummingbirds. You'll find a wide array of CALIFORNIA LILACS (Ceanothus) offering a range of forms and textures from low mats to large upright shrubs, a must for habitat gardeners wishing to enhance their insect and bird populations. We are very proud of our MANZANITA collection (Arctostaphylos) . We have the popular and well know manzanita cultivars such as 'Emerald Carpet' and 'Howard McMinn', as well as harder to find species and selections, including some of our own introductions. Phil selected a fine upright manzanita with pure white urn-shaped flowers from the wilds of West Sonoma County, he has named 'Laguna White'. We have found these common manzanita hybrids offer superior disease resistance. Manzanitas are drought tolerant, early blooming shrubs which are important early nectar sources for bees and hummingbirds. We have flowering currant, hazelnut, western spice bush, nine bark, cream bush, elderberry, huckleberry and coyote bush. There are redwoods and redbuds, buckeyes and buckwheats, coyote mint and coral bells, ferns and other woodland plants, as well as grasses, rushes, sedges, and more!
